Take Comfort in This

Death’s blanket is pulled up tightly to our chins.
Keeping us cosy, squeezing us snug.
A relentless hug from eternity, letting us know
how we are doomed and loved.

As we sleep, we dream up lives for ourselves
– sad, broken, funny, mad –
and our eyes flicker and our hearts tambourine
while we act out tragic scenes.

Though it may grow cold and haunted
in the amusement parks of our minds,
under death’s blanket our bodies stay warm and safe
like babies in their mothers’ arms.
